Historical Summary
The will of Major General Claude Martin provided for schools to be established in Lucknow, Calcutta and in his birthplace Lyon, France. In India, the school in Calcutta opened in 1836 for both boys and girls although classes were separate. Due to legal wrangles, the school at Lucknow did not open till 1845, nor was there any provision for a girls department there. An existing girls school passed into the hands of the Martin Charities who established the Martiniere Girls school at Lucknow in 1869.

La Martiniere schools were among the foremost of the British Raj schools. After Indian Independence in 1947, they continued to provide the new nation with well educated young men and women who distinguished themselves in all walks of life. Many alumni chose to seek their fortunes elsewhere in the lands of what formed the former British Empire at that time and migrated to Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, East Africa and a few ventured to the U.S.A. They have served their adoptive countries well and provided leadership in several services and industries.  It was not long before they sought each other out and formed Alumni Associations and the more successful ones developed and still exist. Old Martinians, old Cottonians, old Gallians, old Oak Grovians and others formed part of this Diaspora and can be found in many parts of the world. This web site serves the interests of the Old Martinians who can be kept informed and be in touch with their comrades.  They, and others from the schools in India, share in a unique history. Their children are proud of their heritage.
